You Can Beat Fibromyalgia! |
|
| Fibromyalgia is a collection of symptoms that come and go, and vary
in intensity. Medical science has not yet determined its cause. While
the cause of fibromyalgia remains unknown, the condition often occurs following
physical trauma -- such as an illness or injury -- which may act as a trigger.
The population most affected is women aged between 20 and 50, but is also
common in war veterans. Its chief characteristics are widespread
pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons, stiffness, fatigue and sleep
that is not restful. It is often found in the company of other related
conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, spastic bladder (urge incontinence),
headaches, myofacial pain (such as TMJ), and chronic fatigue. While
it is not life threatening, it certainly takes the fun out of life.
Traditional medical treatments aim at improving the quality of sleep and reducing pain. However, recent research confirms that a multidisciplinary approach to treating fibromyalgia provides the greatest relief from symptoms and the best prognosis. This approach includes improving the quality of sleep, proper nutrition, physical conditioning, deep relaxation and positive mental imagery. No one medical treatment has proven effective more than 40% of the time. However, by combining therapies, the patient can feel better sooner. In one study published in the Journal of Rheumatology, 40 fibromyalgia
patients were randomly assigned to treatment with either hypnotherapy or
physical therapy for 12 weeks and followed up at 24 weeks. The patients
in the hypnotherapy group showed a significantly better outcome with respect
to pain reduction, fatigue on awakening, sleep patterns, and overall well-being
at 12 and 24 weeks. In addition, those patients treated with hypnotherapy
showed a significant improvement in their overall levels of comfort.
The authors concluded that hypnotherapy was effective in relieving the
symptoms of fibromyalgia.
This program for fibromyalgia symptom alleviation is non-invasive. If you are seeing a physician, this program will work in conjunction with your physician's treatment. If you haven't seen a physician, or only suspect that you have fibromyalgia, you can still feel better. This is a multi-session program that focuses on easing pain, boosting energy levels, restoring sleep without drugs, releasing anxiety and tension, improving concentration and alleviating other troublesome symptoms. Part of the distress of fibromyalgia is the additional stress that it adds to an already stressful life. We can work on relieving the stress, including traumatic stress, without taking on other aspects of the illness, if you prefer. Just being free of muscle tension will ease the muscle pain. Some insurance plans will pay a portion of this fibromyalgia treatment program with a doctor's prescription. There are nutritional issues as well with fibromyalgia. For many
people, B-complex supplements help. Serious reduction in sugar and
starch consumption may lessen pain. And there are medical papers
showing generalized musculoskeletal pain may be reduced by taking adequate
amounts of vitamin D.
